Crystals, Fossils, Dragons, & Dinosaurs

May 21, 2011

Our first stop on today’s adventure was Stone Age Quarry.  L recently showed me her rock collection so I thought she might like this store full of crystals, fossils, rocks, and gems.  We spent some time looking around “oohing” and “aahing” over all of the cool stuff.  We were tempted to buy many things, but we restrained ourselves. When we were all “rocked” out, we got on the road and headed to our next stop, Dragons and Dinos, an exhibit at the Wilbur D. May Museum at Rancho San Rafael Park.

The exhibit was awesome and had a number of huge robotic dinosaurs and other exhibits about how dragons have played a part in our lives from medieval times to Chinese mythology. We even learned about Quetzalcoatl, a Mayan god that had human and feathered serpent forms. There were also lots of hands-on activities for the kids including coloring stations, a puppet theater where you could put on your own puppet show (yes, L made me put on a puppet show for her after she did hers), and a costume dress up area (yes, I put on too-small medieval costumes and no, there are no photos of that).  We did it ALL.
Watching Quetzalcoatl change from man to feathered serpent.
Stegosaurus, unnamed dinosaur, and Pteranodon in the background.
Filling in our scavenger hunt sheet.

Sea Serpent
T-rex
Lots and lots of coloring!
We were able to use our receipt for re-entry so we checked everything out once, went outside and had a picnic lunch and a walk around the arboretum and park, then came back and hit the main part of the museum, the activity area again, and the gift shop. It was a gorgeous day (I think the first beautiful day we’ve had so far this spring) and there were lots of people at the park walking dogs, flying kites, taking photos, and having fun.  We had a great time!!
A new rock for my collection???
Waterless fountain
White, puffy clouds, green trees, and sunshine = beautiful day!
Until our next adventure . . .
