Who Let the Dogs (and Cats) Out?

September 27, 2011

Tonight we put on our volunteer hats and went to the Nevada Humane Society to visit the animals. There are a lot of volunteering options at NHS, and fortunately one of them is to show up anytime to play with the cats or walk the dogs. They welcome the human interaction to help the animals get socialized. We have both been through the volunteer training, L with her previous Big and me a few years ago on my own. Since completing the orientation back in 2008, I have only gone back once to play with a few of the dogs. It was fun to have a friend to go back with this time. We started out in one of the cat colonies, a large room with 20 or so cats in it. These are cats that are more mellow and can be in a large room all together. Most of them were sleeping and didn't react to people coming in the room, but one or two were curious and were actually standing on their feet when we came by to pet them.

After visiting with the cats, we got a collar and leash from the volunteer office and went to the dog kennels to find a dog to take for a walk. First up was Loretta. She was very timid when we approached her kennel and the perfect size for L to walk. We went up and down the cul-de-sac outside and let Loretta sniff around and walk on the grass.
Walking Loretta
When L was done with Loretta, we got her back in her kennel and I decided I wanted to take out Jax whose kennel was right next door. Jax was a big, old yellow lab with obvious hip problems. He seemed excited when we came up to the kennel to get him, so we took him out. I held the leash since he was much bigger and would have taken L for a walk instead of the other way around. Jax seemed to get tired pretty quickly, so much so that L was able to walk him. We didn’t keep him out too long before we brought him back to his kennel.

L wanted to go see her favorite cat once again before we left, Amy, a Siamese. We let her out of her cage for a few minutes so we could pet her and L could hold her. By then it was close to closing time, so we said good-bye and promised to come back again.

L chose Heidi’s for dinner, but it was closed when we got there. The sign said New Fall Hours...closed at 2:00pm Mondays and Tuesdays. Darn! So she picked her go-to place, Port of Subs, as her second choice.  After we ate, we ran my car through Sqeaky’s car wash (always fun!) and then called it an evening.

Hiking

September 21, 2011

Water, check. Binoculars, check. Camera, check. Trail shoes, check. Socks, oops! We remembered her socks, but I forgot mine. Oh well, sweaty, dirty, dusty feet never hurt anybody. Here goes...we are ready for our first hiking/nature adventure. We started out looking at the exhibits and gift shop at the Galena Creek Visitor Center. We learned about the benefits of tap vs. bottled water, how to identify mammal tracks on the trail, what different animal fur feels like, and what snakes occur in the area. Now it’s time to hit the trail. It was a beautiful evening, warm temperatures, a little cloud cover, and no wind. We saw a few cyclists, joggers, and dog walkers on the trail and I taught L a bit of trail etiquette (move the the right, yield to the bikes, say hello, etc.). She carried the binoculars most of the way and tried to look at a couple of birds and a squirrel, but all were too fast and she never really got a good look at any of them. Practice, practice, practice . . . We looked at the different trees, aspen, cottonwood, pine, and also checked out how the pine seeds sit inside of a pine cone. After about 30 minutes we reached a great overlook with a view of the valley, took a few photos, and decided to head back down. Although...fall hikes are beautiful, I’m glad we were able to get in a hike before the official end of summer (autumn equinox is September 23, 2011).
Trips to Heidi’s for dinner and Yogurt Beach for dessert rounded out the evening.

Until our next adventure . . .

Flicker

September 14, 2011

Today we went to Flicker to make candles. We arrived about an hour before they closed and I was worried that we wouldn’t have enough time to get our candles done before they closed. I explained the process to L and she chose to make the star-shaped candle with lemonade scent. I chose a short oval shape and jasmine scent. We picked out all of our wax colors and got to work placing the colored wax in the metal forms. We also chose some decorations for the top and we were done with plenty of time to spare before closing time.
Chopping up the wax blocks to just the right size.
All done and ready for the "filler" wax.

Projects complete!! :)
After candle-making, we headed to Kohl’s to exchange the shoes I got her for walking/hiking adventures. With all of the food choices in the strip mall we were in, she chose Port of Subs for dinner, and we rounded out the evening with more shopping/browsing at PetSmart, Famous Footwear, and Justice.

Until our next adventure . . .

Miniventure

September 2, 2011

This adventure is titled "miniventure" because it was short and sweet! I arrived to pick her up and she had forgotten that I was coming (she hadn't switched her calendar from August to September). Since she had a planned sleepover with two friends arriving soon, we just made a quick trip to the park to play for about an hour before she had to be home to play sleepover hostess.  I think reminder texts the day before are in order.

Until our next adventure . . .
